Put rainwater to good use in the garden, rather than letting it all run out the downspout. Build your own rainwater collection barrel to save money at the same time as keeping plants healthy and watered.
Instructions
1. Cut a square hole in the top of a clean plastic barrel with a hacksaw or other cutting tool. Make the hole about 5- by 3-inches -- enough to get the gutter tube through, with a little extra room -- in the top as close to the edge as possible.
2. Drill a 3/4-inch hole about 6 inches from the bottom, on the opposite side as the top hole. You want the top hole against the building and the hole where the front of the barrel will be. The hole will be for the faucet to be mounted.
3. Screw the faucet into the hole. It may take a bit of force while turning to get it in. It is suppose to be tight to ensure a water tight seal. The metal threads make threads in the plastic barrel. You can use some type of flexible thread compound if you choose or need to. Black RTV sealant works well. Find it at any automotive store.
4. Place the barrel at the bottom of any downspout and modify the downspout to go a few inches into the top hole you made. After a rainfall, connect a hose to the faucet or use a bucket to get the water where you need it. Use it generously, it's free water and is often better for your plants than the water that comes out of your faucet.
