What To Do With A Plastic 50 Gallon Drum

Put your 50-gallon plastic drum to good use.

Plastic 50-gallon drums are often used to transport food items and are readily available for home use once they have served their original purpose. Depending on your personal needs and interests, there are several uses for these drums.

Rain Barrel

Turn your 50-gallon drum into a rain barrel. Attach a hose spigot to the drum by drilling a hole near the bottom of the barrel large enough for your spigot. Place the barrel on an elevated surface, such as concrete blocks, and cut a hole in the top where the rain can enter the barrel. Place the barrel under the downspout from your home's roof to get even more rainwater.

Compost Container

Use your 50-gallon drum as the storage container for your home compost pile. Drill between six and nine rows of half-inch holes into the barrel for air circulation, suggests the University of Minnesota Extension website. Add compost to your drum until it is three-quarters full. Lay the drum down every couple of days and roll it back and forth to mix your composting materials.

Farm Endeavors

Use 50-gallon drums with removable lids to store feed or grain for barnyard animals. Create a jump or cross-country obstacles for your horse by laying down several barrels, or set three up in a triangular shape to improve your horse's barrel-racing skills at home. Saw a barrel in half and use it as a water trough for your animals.
