Wooden Barrel For Making Wine

Wine making is a time honored tradition in some families. Other families are new to making their own wines. These wines can be used for cooking, to drink at dinner, or to serve during special occasions. A wooden barrel is a key tool for any vintner. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Finding a Wine Barrel

Oak barrels are the most commonly used barrels for wine making. Barrels come in a variety of sizes, ranging from small single-bottle versions to huge barrels used for mass production of wine. Oak barrels are most commonly wrapped in either aluminum or copper. Some can be very creative and beautiful, while others are simply functional.

Flavoring the Wine

The oak barrel in which the wine is aged can impart a flavor to the wine. Find an oak wine barrel with a scent you like, or a wooden barrel that produces wines you enjoy. There are two main kinds of oak barrels used in wine making---French and American---and the trees used for barrels can come from several regions. Finding the right combination for your homemade wine will make a serious difference in your enjoyment of the wine.

Cure the Barrel

Each wine barrel must be cured before wine can be made in it. Carefully clean the barrel to remove any contaminants and bacteria. Bake the barrel to allow the wood to harden and resist the damage that wine can do to untreated wood.
