How Do You Make A Chair Out Of Wood

Highly grained planks of wood make interesting plank chairs.

Wooden plank chairs are easier to make than many types of furniture, and depending on the wood you use and how it is finished, the chairs can look either rustic or ultra modern. As with other wooden furniture, adding cushions can make the chairs more comfortable and can completely change their appearance. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cut the plank in half.

2. Make the seat and back leg. Starting 15 inches from one end of one of the planks, cut 2 inches off each side. Sand these edges, and round them if you prefer.

3. Make the chair back and front leg. Center the smaller end of the back leg on the other plank 15 1/2 inches from one end. Trace the end, then set that plank aside. Cut the hole you just traced, making it 1/4 inch larger on each side than the trace mark.

4. Fit the two planks together. With the chair set up, sit in it to determine whether it is comfortable. Once you are satisfied with the fit, trim the ends of the legs so they rest flat on the ground rather than on edge.

5. Take the two pieces of wood apart and sand and round each edge to your preference. Make sure both pieces are clean, then stain and shellac the wood to protect it.
