Compare Rain Barrels

Rain barrels collect rainwater from your roof to use for outside watering.

A rain barrel is a system that collects and stores rainwater from your roof that would otherwise run off, according to the Environment Protection Agency. By using a rain barrel, the EPA says you can save about 1,300 gallons of water each summer. Environmentally, using a rain barrel reduces water pollution by reducing storm water runoff. Does this Spark an idea?

Use

One of the key factors in comparing rain barrels is evaluating how the trapped rainwater will be used. Rainwater collected from roof runoff is not safe to drink and should not be used on food crops or vegetable gardens. Determine if you will have enough outside uses for the runoff, such as watering your flowers or lawn or washing your car.

Size

The size of rain barrels varies. The average size of a plastic rain barrel is 55 gallons. Determine how much rainwater you want to collect and under which downspout you will locate the rain barrel before you decide what size barrel you need.

Cost

Depending on their size, style and features, rain barrels usually cost between $89 and $135, according to the University of Rhode Island.

Safety

Decide if you want your rain barrel to have an attached screen or lid on top. A screen or lid can prevent children and animals from accidentally falling into the barrel, will reduce the chance of the rainwater collecting organic matter, and will prevent the rainwater from becoming a breeding ground for insects.
