Build An Inexpensive Compost Bin

A trash can with holes is an inexpensive option for a backyard compost bin.

Turning organic material into compost can be done in a variety of ways. One of the most inexpensive composting alternatives is to transform an old garbage can-metal or plastic-into a compost bin by simply drilling or punching holes into the sides and bottom.

Once this job is complete, make sure to churn the contents of your bin to assure the material is mixed and aerated. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Drill holes 4 to 6 inches apart around the circumference of the garbage can, beginning at the bottom. Drill a similar row of holes 6 inches above the first row. Continue moving the rows up the can until about halfway to the top.

2. Drill a number of holes on the bottom of the garbage can for drainage.

3. Place the lid on the garbage can. Put the can on the bricks, allowing for air to move between the ground and the bottom of the can.
