Use A Soaker Water Hose

A soaker hose provides supplemental water to gardens.

Soaker hoses look like a regular garden hose with tiny holes along the sides of the hose. This design allows water to drip or seep out of the holes gradually throughout the day to provide water to plants. According to the University of Rhode Island Sustainable Landscape Program, soaker hoses are effective for gardens and flower beds where plants are spaced close together, but are not recommended for beds with wide spaces between plants. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Attach the soaker hose to the outside spigot or the spigot of your rain barrel. Screw the washer onto the spigot until it is tight and resists your efforts.

2. Position the soaker hose near the base of your plants approximately 3 to 4 inches from the stem of the plants. For closely spaced plants, position the hose an equal distance between the plants to allow all plants to benefit from the supplemental water.

3. Turn on the spigot to allow water to flow into the soaker hose. The hose is designed to drip or seep water slowly along the entire length.

4. Check the soil to determine when the soil is moist to the desired level. Typically, soil should be moist to the root level of the specific plants you are growing.

5. Turn off the spigot when your soil reaches the desired amount of moisture.
