Attach A Spigot To A Plastic Container

Attach a Spigot to a Plastic Container

You can quickly attach a spigot to a plastic container to enable efficient dispensing. Plastic containers can hold a wide variety of products for home and commercial use. Some filled plastic containers are heavy and difficult to lift in order to pour from a top opening. Adding a spigot can make it easier to pour products quickly and with less mess and waste. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Examine the plastic container to make sure it does not already have a spot that is threaded for a spigot. If it is threaded, you may need to contact the container manufacturer to find the specific spigot that will spin right into place on the container. Containers without preset spigot locations can be bored out to accommodate.

2. Measure the diameter of the portion of the spigot that will pass through the plastic container. Use a permanent marker to draw a circle with the same diameter in the container where you want to add the spigot.

3. Drill a small hole in the center of the marked circle and increase the bit sizes until the diameter of the hole is large enough for the spigot.

4. Clean the container and newly cut hole with a nonabrasive sponge using liquid dish soap and hot water. Completely dry all the plastic surfaces with paper towel.

5. Line the edges on both sides of the hole with small beads of fungicidal food-grade silicone sealant.

6. Unscrew the washer on the back end of the spigot and insert the spigot into the hole in the plastic container.

7. Screw the washer back onto the spigot to secure it in place in the hole. Wipe away excess silicone sealant from both sides of the spigot with paper towels.

8. Allow the seal around the spigot to dry overnight before filling it with water to test its ability to hold liquid. If it leaks, add more silicone sealant to the area surrounding the spigot and allow it to set again overnight. Fill the container with the product you wish to dispense once you are certain the seal will hold.
