Use A Plastic Trash Can As A Rain Barrel

The bigger the trash can, the more rain you can collect.

Many people turn plastic trash cans into rain barrels because it typically costs less than buying a premade barrel. Modifying a trash can only requires three changes to the can, including the addition of low-cost, easy-to-assemble plumbing and other hardware. Once you have modified a trash can, you use it the same way as any rain barrel: Place it in an area where it can collect rainwater, and disperse collected water with a bucket or hose. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Modify the Trash Can

1. Drill a hole slightly smaller than the width of the threaded nipple through the side of the trash can approximately 3 to 5 inches from the bottom. Drill another hole, slightly smaller than the width of the threaded end of the plastic pipe insert, on the side near the top of the trash can.

2. Screw the nipple into the hose bib, and then push the nipple's threaded end into the bottom hole until the back of the hose bib is flush against the outside of the trash can. If the hole is too small, re-drill and then insert.

3. Push the threaded end of the plastic pipe insert into the top hole. Re-drill the hole if it is too small.

4. Secure the hose bib and overflow pipe to the trash can by sliding a washer over each threaded end inside the can. Thread tailpipe nuts on each end until they're tight.

5. Run a bead of waterproof caulk around the outside edge of the hose bib and overflow pipe to prevent future leaking.

6. Cut a large hole or square out of the top of your trash can's lid with a utility knife.

7. Cut a piece of nylon mesh/screen with your metal-cutting scissors to a size 1 inch larger than the hole or square. Place the mesh over the hole so that it overlaps the cutout by 1 inch and screw it in place at each corner and the middle of the sides.

Collect and Disperse Rain Water

8. Place your plastic trash can on a flat, level, elevated area at least 2 feet off the ground or on stacked concrete blocks at a similar height.

9. Wait for it to rain. The barrel will fill with rainwater.

10. Set a bucket under the hose-bib faucet, turn the wheel to fill the bucket and then pour the water on your garden. Alternatively, connect a hose to the hose bib, turn the wheel and pour water on your plants.
