Cut Up Aluminum Cans For Art

The bottom of the cans can also be used to make a unique piece of art.

Aluminum cans can be exciting and unique components to many art projects and have been used to create three-dimensional sculptures, wearable items such as jewelry, purses and clothing as well as in paintings and concept art. They will last for years (and possibly even decades if cared for) before fading, if kept out of the sun. They are also easy to acquire for free and recycle for use in your work.

Instructions

1. Decide what you want to create. Maybe you only want to use one color or you plan to make a social commentary on a brand. Figure it out before you start so you don't waste time, effort and storage space on cans you won't need.

2. Figure out what you want from the can. Maybe you are making a large piece using just the tops of the cans, or maybe you want to make a sculpture using the flowers on an Arizona tea can. Know exactly what you want before cutting, because there is no going back afterward.

3. Use a pair of kitchen shears or some similar thick, heavy-duty scissors to cut your cans. You will not be able to use the scissors for anything but metal cutting afterward. If you have tiny details like a pattern to cut out, cut around it using the scissors, then go in with a pair of small jeweler's cutters to snip out the details.

4. Use a pair of pliers to bend down the sharp edges until you are ready to work. This will help you avoid getting cut.
