Use Epoxy To Glue A Watertight Seal

Read manufacturer's instructions and follow safety recomendations when mixing and handling epoxy.

Epoxy products consist of two basic parts, a resin and a hardener. When mixed together, the components react with one another, causing the product to harden in a relatively short amount of time. The chemical makeup of epoxy products can vary widely, so be certain to choose a product that forms a watertight seal after mixing. Before selecting an epoxy, also consider the type of application needed. Epoxy products are available for metal, wood, plastic and many other types of surfaces. Selecting the correct product for the job is vital to the overall success of your project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Using Epoxy to Form a Watertight Bond

1. Understand use the product before you begin your project.

Read the manufacturer's instructions and safety recommendations carefully before starting your project. You will need to know the products specific mixing and application instructions, as well as the recommended curing time.

2. Use sandpaper or a metal file to rough the surface.

Prepare the surface for epoxy application. Use sandpaper or a metal file to roughen up the surface. This will help the epoxy adhere to the area where it is applied.

3. Use a damp cloth to clean the area.

Clean the area of residue. Be sure to remove all surface dirt and grease. If necessary, clean off any chemical residue that could interfere with the bonding process.

4. Use a putty knife to cut off the amount of epoxy you need to finish the project.

Remove the product from the tube or stick. Use a putty knife cut off the amount needed to complete the job. Be sure to recover any unused portion to prevent it from drying out. Use plastic gloves to protect your skin when handling epoxy.

5. Use gloved hands to knead the resin and hardener together.

Work the product in your hands, using your fingers to help mix the epoxy resin and hardener. The texture and color should be uniform prior to application. Most products suggest kneading for at least three minutes.

6. Work the epoxy into any cracks or openings to ensure a watertight seal.

Use a putty knife or wooden craft stick to apply the epoxy to the roughened surface. Be certain to work the product into any cracks, as well as to completely fill all openings. This will ensure a watertight seal.

7. Allow the product to harden completely in order to form a watertight seal.

Allow the product to cure. Follow manufacturer's recommendations for hardening times. Some products can cure in 10 to 20 minutes, while others may take up to 12 hours to completely harden. The product should be completely dried and hardened before finishing, or exposing to water.
