Build your golf course with trash.
Even before "Kick the Can" and "Paper Wad Basketball," trash entertained kids. Teach your children the fine art of reusing and recycling by creating entertaining games out of the trash that usually ends up in the refuse bin. Give your creative juices a jump-start. Create this miniature golf game for kids by using trash from start to finish.
Instructions
1. Create golf clubs from newspapers.
Build your golf clubs from trash. For each golf club, crumple several sheets of newspaper and form it into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Cover the newspaper with duct tape.Tape the covered newspaper to one end of the 2-foot dowel. Cut 4-inch long strips of newspaper and wrap them around the top of the dowel. Hold them in place with duct tape. Cover the entire golf club with tape by wrapping it around the dowel and the newspaper starting at the top of the dowel.
2. Make your ball by crumpling a half sheet of newspaper into a tight ball. Hold it in place with a rubber-band. Cut strips of newspaper and cover them with glue. Cover the crumpled up newspaper with the glue-laden strips of paper. Smooth the strips as you go. After the glue dries, paint the ball. Make one ball for each club.
3. Cut nine two-foot by six-foot strips from used indoor/outdoor carpet. On one end of each piece of carpet, cut round holes that will accommodate the golf balls. Make the course challenging by cutting "T" shapes or angles at the end where you cut the hole.
4. Remove the flaps from two empty 10-inch tall cardboard boxes. Cut holes in each box large enough to accommodate the golf balls. The holes form the mouths as you use paper mache (see Step 5) to create Easter Island figures on two of the boxes. Paint the figures light brown.
5. Make a bowlful of paper mache. Thoroughly mix 16 ounces of water with 16 ounces of flour and one tablespoon of salt. Cover strips of newspaper with the mixture and apply them to the box. Build it up to form the desired shapes. Let the newspaper dry between layers.
6. Cut the flaps from four more cardboard boxes. Decorate the boxes by gluing empty plastic containers on them. Cut one hole in each box. Vary the hole's location. Spray paint each box one solid color.
7. Remove the flaps from three more cardboard boxes. Cut openings shaped like doors in the boxes. Glue more empty boxes on top and create skyscrapers. Cover them with used gold or silver wrapping paper. Draw windows with a marker.
8. Lay the carpet out on flat ground. Create uneven surfaces by placing scrap wood under the carpet. Place the boxes over the holes in the carpet. Line up the hole and the opening on the box. Line the carpet with two-by-fours. Give all of the players a golf club and try out your new miniature golf game created with trash. (Check Resources for the rules of the game.)
