Flush toilets can use up large amounts of water. Some older toilets, in particular, use well over five gallons of water per flush. This can become costly if you don't have your own well and it certainly doesn't conform to modern eco-friendly standards. To cut back on your toilet's water usage, consider flushing with rainwater instead of with water you pay to have pumped into your home. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Position a rain barrel under the gutter spout of your house. This maximizes the amount of rainwater you can collect. To keep the water as clean as possible, position a screen over the top of the barrel.
2. Fill several milk jugs or large containers with the harvested water. Some rain barrels have a spigot at the bottom for this purpose, otherwise, simply lift the screen and submerge the containers into the water through the top.
3. Keep the containers of water near the toilet so you do not have to fetch fresh water each time you use the bathroom.
4. Pour the water into the toilet bowl when you are ready to flush. Once you've added enough water to the bowl, the toilet will flush automatically.
