Take Advantage Of Summer Rain

Summer rain can be collected and used for irrigation of flower gardens.

Summer rains can provide many useful advantages, such as irrigation of gardens and water collection and storage. The best residential rain collection system involves a large surface area, such as the roof on a house. A gutter system can collect most of the rain coming from the roof and direct it to multiple locations. Large storage barrel systems can be designed that will collect rain water for future use, such as watering gardens during dry spells. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Build the gutter system on a long roof with the downspout close to a garden or flower bed. Use the hammer and long gutter nails to secure the main gutter to the roof fascia board. The gutter should have a very slight slope toward the downspout to allow adequate water flow. The downspout should only be 2 feet long.

2. Place the barrel stand underneath the downspout. Place the barrel on the barrel stand so the downspout is pointed directly into the barrel.

3. Connect the garden hose to the garden hose connection on the barrel's drain valve. Ensure the drain valve is closed. After several heavy summer rain showers, the barrel should be sufficiently full.

4. Open the barrel drain valve and use the collected water to irrigate gardens and flower beds.
