Recycle Rain Water

Collect and use rain water.

Collecting and using rain water is good for the planet and will help you cut down on your home's water consumption, reducing your water bill. Collected rain water can be used for many purposes, such as watering plants and washing outdoor items. You can buy and install rain barrels for collecting large amounts of water, but they are expensive. Collect small amounts of water using gallon jugs from around your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Dig a hole directly in front of one or more downspouts on your property. The hole should be big enough for a one-gallon jug to fit into.

2. Place your container in the hole so that the opening of the jug is level with the ground, and fill in the dirt. You could use a size other than a one-gallon jug if you have one. Just be sure it will not be too heavy to lift out of the ground.

3. Cover the opening of the jug with mesh and secure with a rubber band. This will keep mosquitoes out of the water as well as filter out any sticks or debris from your gutters.

4. Repeat in any other places in your yard where rain collects.

5. Take the jugs out of the ground when they are filled, and use the water. Then place the empty containers back in the ground. The jugs may not catch all of the water from the downspout, but they will catch a lot.
