Reduce A Downspout To Fit A Hose

Reducing the size of a downspout allows a garden hose to attach to it.

A downspout fits onto gutters to direct the flow of water from the roof, to the gutters and down to the ground. Rainwater can be used to hydrate plants and gardens, to prevent the need of using water from a well or the water company, thus saving you money. A series of PVC reducers can decrease the size of the downspout to fit a standard garden hose. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the bottom opening of the downspout using a measuring tape. The standard size is three inches wide and four inches tall.

2. Push a downspout adapter, of the correct size, onto the downspout bottom (the square end fits on the downspout bottom). Place a screw on each of the four sides, and drill the screws through the junction of the downspout and the adapter. Apply silicone caulk around the perimeter of each screw head to seal them.

3. Screw a four-inch to three-inch reducer onto the round, four-inch end of the adapter.

4. Screw a three-inch to one and a half-inch reducer onto the end of the previous reducer.

5. Screw a one and a half-inch to a three-fourth-inch reducer onto the end of the previous reducer.

6. Apply PVC glue liberally to the flat end of a male hose end. Insert the coated flat end into the three-fourth-inch reducer, and twist it to coat the inside of the PVC reducer. Let the glue dry for about five minutes before letting water flow through the pipes.

7. Screw the female end of a garden hose onto the male end, to attach the garden hose.
