Make A Rainwater Catcher Out Of Plywood

Saving rainwater for later use can help your garden grow in dry climates.

In areas such as the Midwest, water use restrictions and cost can prevent you from growing a nice garden. Although these areas experience rainfall of no more than 6-8 inches per year, you can store this rainwater for later use in your garden or lawn. This will allow you to use less water from the city and save you some money on your bill. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine the volume of rainwater you wish to store. If you want to build a catcher that holds 55 gallons, you will need about 7.5 cubic feet of storage. This is equal to a square container measuring 18 inches wide, 18 inches deep and 40 inches high. You can adjust the dimensions and volume to suit your needs. One US liquid gallon is equal to 231 cubic inches.

2. Measure and cut the plywood sections so that the inside dimensions will match your needed volume. Allow the plywood sections enough room to overlap one another. Secure the pieces together using the screws and drill.

3. Cut a base section the size of the opening. Cut another section the same size as the base. This will serve as the top so the water will not become a breeding ground for insects such as mosquitoes. Secure the base to the rain catcher.

4. Construct legs from the 2x4 sections of wood so the rain catcher will sit at least one foot off the ground. This will prevent the bottom of the catcher from rotting. Paint both the legs and the plywood with paint to preserve them. White paint will help keep the water cool by reflection sunlight.

5. Attach the legs to the plywood and set it upright. Place the tarp inside of the catcher and allow the excess to drape over the sides. Thread the rope through the eyelets of the tarp and tie the rope around the catcher. This will prevent the tarp from folding in on itself. Place the catcher in the open or underneath a gutter spout. Cover the catcher when not in use.
