Put A Garden Hose Spigot On A Five Gallon Pail

Put a Garden Hose Spigot on a Five Gallon Pail

Spigots are devices that allow fluids to flow through when open and stop the flow when closed. Spigots are used in buckets, pails and coolers when brewing tea, juice and wine. Pails with spigots can also be used in the garden to transport water or fertilizing solution. Although pails with spigots can be purchased at most home improvement stores, you can also make one yourself with a few basic tools. The cost of making a pail with a spigot is much lower than purchasing one. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a drill to create a 3/4-inch hole in the side of the pail approximately 1 inch from the bottom of the pail. For ease of use when pouring, drill the hole on one of the sides where the bucket handle falls.

2. Insert a 3/4-inch plastic nipple into the hole. This is a round device that fits perfectly into the hole and allows you to attach the spigot later. If the nipple does not fit, use a wood file to smooth out the edges of the hole until it does.

3. Insert a 3/4-inch plastic gate (the spigot) into the outside of the bucket by pushing the round section into the plastic nipple until secure.

4. Reach inside the bucket and place a 3/4-inch rubber O-ring around the section of the spigot that extends inside the bucket. This creates a watertight seal to prevents leaks.

5. Insert a 3/4-inch female reducer, provided with the spigot, on top of the O-ring inside the bucket. Push the reducer tightly against the O-ring.
