Make Beer Brewing Equipment

Home brewing can be an enjoyable and rewarding hobby.

Most people would be surprised to learn they're only one or two pieces of specialized equipment away from brewing their own beer. While most things required for your first brew are things you can find lying about your house, you'll need to build a fermenter with a spigot Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Drill a 1-in diameter hole on the wall of the plastic bucket toward the bottom, using the drill. Be careful not to make the hole too large, as you need a tight seal between the spigot and bucket wall.

2. Insert the spigot into the hole, making sure you can see part of it on the other side. If the spigot doesn't fit, drill the hole a little larger.

3. Use the glue gun on the inside and outside of the bucket to seal the corner where the spigot and bucket wall meet. Let this first layer dry before beginning your beer brewing process. If necessary, add another layer or two of hot glue on both sides if you feel any air or liquid could get through.

4. Drill a hole in the lid of the bucket for the blow-off tube. The hole should be about 1 inch or less in diameter to ensure a good seal with the two feet of 1-inch-diameter tubing.

5. Insert the tubing into the hole in the bucket lid. Make sure you can see the tube on the underside of the lid. If necessary, drill the hole a little wider to fit the tube, but be careful not to drill it too large. This will ensure a good seal between the tubing and the lid.

6. Use the glue gun on the top and underside of the lid to seal the corner where the tubing and lid surfaces meet. Let this first layer dry before beginning your beer brewing process. If necessary, add another layer or two of hot glue on both sides if you feel any air or liquid could get through.

7. Drill a 1-inch-diameter hole on the top of the jar lid. This hole should fit the tubing now attached and sealed with glue to the lid of the fermenter bucket. Poke or drill several smaller holes around the larger hole.

8. Insert the other end of the 1-inch-diameter plastic tubing into the hole in the jar lid. When brewing, fill the jar halfway with water before inserting the tube and make sure the tip of the tube is immersed in the water.
