Fill Plastic Gas Tanks Safely

Filling the gas tank for your vehicle is something you were probably taught as early as when you received your driver's license. Filling up a plastic gas tank, however, is slightly different. Plastic gas tanks come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and are used for many reasons, but the overall concern you should have with filling them up is to do so safely.

Instructions

1. Put on Latex gloves. While this step isn't absolutely necessary, it is a good idea to wear them so that you don't get gas on your hands, which may then be transferred to other areas of the body.

2. Remove the plastic gas tank from your vehicle and place it on the ground. Assuming that you are filling up the tank at a local gas station, if it is possible, transport it there in a truck or SUV--something with ample room for a gas tank. Once there, remove it, as it is never safe to fill up an extra tank or container while it is still inside the vehicle.

3. Remove the nozzle cap from the tank. Unplug or remove the ventilation hole as well. The nozzle cap will be covering the hole that is large enough to fit the gas nozzle inside of it. The ventilation hole is usually much smaller and only used so that the airflow inside is smooth and doesn't make the gas sputter into the tank--this may cause splashing, which is unsafe.

4. Insert your credit card to pay for gas, or go inside the store to pre-pay the gas station attendant. Follow the onscreen prompts to choose the grade of fuel you would like to purchase.

5. Remove the gas nozzle from the holster, making sure not to pull the trigger. Place the tip of the nozzle into the nozzle hole in your gas tank.

6. Squeeze the lever and watch as your gas container fills with fuel. The gas pump should automatically shut off when the tank is full, but this isn't always accurate, so make sure to keep a constant eye on the level at all times.

7. Remove the nozzle and replace it in the pump's holster once fueling has finished.

8. Replace all the caps on tightly. Make sure that there is no way gas may seep out.

9. Set the tank upright in the back of your SUV or truck. Never lay it on its side where the cap may come loose and spill it's contents. Feel free to strap it down with bungee cord or securing straps if need be.
