Make Rain Barrels From Pickle Barrels

Make Rain Barrels From Pickle Barrels

Rain barrels are used to collect and store rainwater that would otherwise run off into the ground. You can use the collected water to irrigate your landscaping, water your garden or houseplants, or even fill up your hot tub. Using this water saves you money and helps the environment, since it replaces some of the treated water you would otherwise use. The water is softer than most tap water, since it does not have chlorine or lime. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean the barrel thoroughly using a mixture of one part bleach to five parts water. Rinse thoroughly to remove any vinegar or other remnants.

2. Use the pavers to create a level surface for the water to accumulate. Keeping the barrel off the ground will also prevent the damp ground from rotting or damaging the bottom. This platform should be directly beneath a downspout on your home or other building.

3. Drill a hole a few inches from the bottom of the barrel with the 15/16" drill bit. Wrap the threads of the drain valve with Teflon tape and screw the threaded end into the drilled hole.

4. Disconnect part of the downspout so that you can put the end of it into the barrel. If there is not a piece you can disconnect, use the hacksaw to cut off an appropriately sized piece.

5. Cut a hole in the lid or top of your bucket, if it has one. The hole needs to be large enough for you to slide it over the end of the downspout. Make sure the drain valve is away from the wall before you cut this hole.

6. Place the barrel onto the platform with the drain valve out and the downspout into the top. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve so that you can direct the water you collect where you want it.
