Recycle Yard Water

If you are trying to live "green" and make as little of a carbon footprint as possible, or if you are just trying to cut some costs at home, you may recycle yard water for other purposes. By setting out some rain barrels or buckets in your yard, you may collect water at no cost when it rains. The website of Holly Springs, North Carolina, notes that watering of lawns and gardens accounts for 40 percent of summertime water use in the town. Recycling rainwater can save you around 1,300 gallons of water in the summer months. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Set rain barrels or buckets outside your home. Position the barrels under the downspouts of your gutters to collect the most water.

2. Irrigate your garden or lawn using the water you have collected. This will keep you from having to turn on the sprinkler or irrigation system.

3. Wash your car using the yard water you have collected.

4. Mop your floors using the collected water. When you're done, you may use the mop water to water the flowers or garden.

5. Allow your children to use the water from the barrels or buckets to fill water guns or water balloons.
