Make Rainwater Barrels

Collecting rainwater is an excellent way to be eco-conscious while conserving water. In fact, rainwater collection lends a hand to watering your garden without using tap water that costs money. Knowing make rainwater barrels isn't difficult because the barrels themselves can be found in a lot of different places. Rainwater collection in your own homemade cisterns allows you to be thoughtful about the environment and its resources.

Instructions

1. Cut a square of mesh netting from the roll that is at least double the size of the opening at the top of the barrel you have selected. You can find barrels in many places, including junk yards, gardening shops and online. Plastic barrels are ideal for collecting water, as are plastic garbage cans.

2. Stretch the sheet of mesh netting over the opening of the barrel. Smooth the excess edge of the mesh netting over the sides of the top of the barrel.

3. Hook together two bungee ties that each measure 6 inches in length.

4. Wrap the connected bungees, used as one bungee, around the top of the barrel. Hook the ends together after stretching it tightly around the barrel. This secures the netting around the top of the barrel to prevent foreign objects from entering with the rainwater.
