Adding scope rings to a rifle is a great upgrade.
Mounting a scope on your rifle is a great way to improve long-range shooting. Many rifles come from the factory pre-drilled for scope rings. If your rifle isn't drilled, you can pay a gunsmith to do the job, or with some careful work, you can do it yourself. Doing this job correctly requires some specialized equipment and careful measuring, but if you take your time you will get a great result, and enjoy the satisfaction of doing the work yourself.
Instructions
1. Disassemble the rifle. Every rifle is different, so follow the manufacturer's dis-assembly instructions until you have just the barrel and receiver with all other parts removed.
2. Mount the barreled receiver in your drilling jig. Drilling jigs are available from gunsmith supply stores online. Follow the instructions for your specific jig to ensure that it is installed and aligned correctly. Exact alignment of the scope ring mounting holes is critical.
3. Clamp the receiver/drilling jig into your drill press work vise. Take care not to apply excessive vise pressure, which could warp or damage your receiver.
4. Using a No. 31 drill bit, drill each required mounting hole in the rifle receiver through the guide holes in the jig. Drill at a slow press speed and take your time.
5. Tap each mounting hole with a 6-48 thread. This is a standard scope mounting screw thread size. Work slowly so you don't break the tap off in the receiver.
