Recover Patio Furniture Seat Cushions

Recover patio seat cushions to enjoy your outdoor furniture.

It is not a hard task to "go green" by repurposing your well-used patio furniture instead of throwing it out for a new set. Oftentimes, all it needs is a face-lift--just recover your patio furniture seat cushions and enjoy your outdoor living with them for many seasons to come. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Getting Started

1. Remove the old cushion covers from the seat cushions. Cut the parts of the seat cushion covers along the seam lines to separate them.

2. Inspect the condition of the foam--if still in good condition reuse it, and if not, replace it with new foam of the same density and thickness.

3. Fold over the outdoor canvas to make two layers of the fabric. Lay the old cover pieces on top and mark their outlines with straight pins, or simply cut around the old pieces to make the new ones.

4. Match up the parts that go together. Line up the bottom of the cushion to the top or to the side panel before connecting the top. Match right sides together and sew the pieces together about one inch from the edge.

5. Snip the corners of the patio furniture seat cushions off between the seam line and the edge of the fabric to prevent bunching at the corners.

Replacing the Cushion Covers

6. Press the seams of the new cushion covers flat and then turn the covers inside out.

7. Put the foam inside the new cushion cover. Pin the opening closed by folding in the raw edges of the fabric and meeting the two sides together.

8. Stitch the opening closed with the sewing machine or by hand.

9. Place the new patio furniture seat cushions onto the patio furniture after giving them a good washing and allowing them time to dry.

Patio Furniture Maintenance

10. Maintain your patio furniture to extend its life.

11. Only put the cushions on the furniture when you expect to use them. Do not leave them outside for an extended period of time, even though they look nice when set up.

12. Watch the weather forecasts daily for rain in your area. If rain is expected, do not leave your patio furniture out that day.

13. Wipe down your patio furniture to remove dirt, dust or salt deposits before storing it. Give the furniture time to dry to prevent mildew from forming.
