A solar garden fountain beautifies the landscape with no energy cost. Building your own provides the satisfaction of a do-it-yourself project. Transform a sunny spot in the yard into an oasis of tranquility. Create an economical water feature with a wine barrel or large ceramic pot, solar panel and pump. Basic Wine Barrel Solar Fountain
1. A half wine barrel makes a good-sized fountain. If the container is liable to rot or leak, measure it and get a liner to fit. Watertight liners are available at pond supply and some hardware stores.
2. Get the right solar fountain kit. Some have panels that can be positioned several feet from the fountain. Larger fountains require larger pumps. For this project, a 12-volt low-noise submersible pump works well.
3. If possible, locate the fountain away from noise sources, where the water sounds will have the most effect. A spot near a flowerbed with a seating area works well.
4. Shovel out 6 inches of topsoil in an area at least 8 inches larger in diameter than the fountain container. Add gravel, then moist sand, and tamp down. Use a level so the fountain will stand straight.
5. Place the container in the center. Set up the solar panel according to the kit directions, either on the side of the fountain where it will get the most sun, or within the recommended distance. Connect the fountain parts to the pump.
6. Station the pump in the container. Use rocks or decorative elements to conceal the pump. Make sure the intake vents and water outlet remain clear. Add water. Don't fill the container too full. Put in water lilies or other pond plants if desired. Sit back and enjoy.
