Dispose Of 55 Gallon Steel Polyurethane Resin Containers

Clean resin containers welll before disposal.

Polyurethane resin is a two-part solution that is mixed to form a hard, semi-transparent plastic material. It is used to seal surfaces, as well as create molded parts. Large quantities of polyurethane resin are sold in steel barrels. Empty resin barrels are technically not classified as hazardous waste, but they still require special disposal techniques. When disposing of a steel container with polyurethane resin, you must clean it thoroughly prior to disposal. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Look inside the steel container to see if there is still polyurethane resin in it. If there is still solution inside, pour it into a smaller can or container for later disposal. Empty paint cans work well for disposal purposes.

2. Place the steel container in an outdoor location in an upright position.

3. Turn on a garden hose with a sprayer attachment on it. Adjust the sprayer head to the strongest stream possible.

4. Put on safety glasses and squeeze the trigger of the hose sprayer, directing the spray inside the steel container.

5. Spray the entire inside of the steel container with water until you have rinsed all surfaces once. Tilt the steel container carefully and pour out the water into another empty paint can. Use multiple paint cans if necessary.

6. Lay the steel container on its side. If the container is round, place a brick on either side of the container to prevent it from rolling.

7. Repeat the rinsing process with the hose two additional times, making sure to spray water on all internal surfaces. It is safe to pour out water from the second and third rinses into the sewer or on the ground.

8. Set the steel container upright and allow it to air dry completely, then place it into a dumpster.

9. Locate a local paint disposal location in your area that accepts used paint and chemicals. Take the paint cans containing the resin residue to the location. Your local landfill is the first place to call since they sometimes have separate waste facilities for paint products. If they do not accept paint products, they can direct you to a facility that does.
