Recycled garbage has been the medium to create such works as a giant bird in the middle of the New Mexican desert, to robot installations in major metropolitan art galleries. All that's required for the potential artist is free time, ambition and source materials. Sustainability and awareness of trash consumed can have a political effect, and the materials are essentially free. Sketching, designing and choosing an ideal location are equally required to complete the statue. This type of art provides great photo opportunities and is a classic project for students.
Instructions
1. Acquire a trash source. Bottles, paper and other malleable objects like aluminum cans make good material to work with. These options are ideal because they are easily washable and do not have a strong odor. Setup a source for recyclable trash such as school donations, or organize a park and stream cleanup. If these options are not available, speak with a local recycling facility for their rejected scrap.
Choose a location nearby and check with the local authorities. Indoor installations may have increased cost, while outdoor installations are cheaper but are subject to weather conditions.
2. Decide what type of statue to build. A few ideas are human statues, robots and animals. Parts with specific shapes such as tires and long pieces of metal are perfect for structural integrity.
Draw a rough sketch of your design, then complete the statue's construction. Safety is key for taller structures in both construction and admiration. Build the frame with the strongest material and work outwards with less resilient material. Use tires and barrels for larger installations.
3. Naturally, many of the pieces do not interconnect without adhesive. For metal, spot welding or epoxy is an effective way of completing a perfect statute. But if this is too advanced, consider using paper and glue, or bottles with tape for quicker and cost-effective designs. Tie plastic bags together for recyclable chains that keep the structure intact. Protect from wind and rain damage by covering the statue with plastic wrap if needed. Dispose of the waste responsibly in conjunction with the local recycling center.
