Diy Grey Water Filters

Grey water is the leftover water from a bath, shower, laundry or sink. If you live in an area with limited water access or simply wish to conserve, you can recycle this water. While the grey water is not safe for consumption, it can be used to water your plants and yard. In order to clean the water for re-use and remove the contaminants, you must filter it. Using a large rain barrel, you can create your own grey water filter to make the recycling process easy and convenient. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place a rain barrel on top of two or three concrete blocks. This is to elevate the barrel.

2. Lay clean cotton cloth along the bottom of a 55-gallon rain barrel.

3. Fill the barrel a third of the way with clean gravel.

4. Fill the barrel another third with washed sand -- the barrel will be two-thirds full.

5. Fill the remainder of the rain barrel with activated charcoal. Allow a space of one inch to the rim of the barrel.

6. Lay another sheet of clean cotton cloth across the top of the barrel.

7. Pour the grey water into the top of the barrel. The water will flow through the homemade filter. Once filtered, the recycled water is accessible via the spout in the bottom of the rain barrel.
