Uses For Recycled Plastic Barrels

Plastic barrels are ideal compost bins.

Recycling plastic barrels is a practical way to save money on items that you would normally purchase; help the environment by reusing something that might be thrown away; and even make a profit reselling your creations. When choosing a plastic barrel to recycle, find one that is food grade and has not stored toxic chemicals. There are many sizes to choose from in used plastic barrels. You can purchase them or possibly get them free; look for them at online stores, food processing plants and food supply stores. The key is to purchase one so your efforts will not cost more than if you were to purchase the item you are using the barrel for. Does this Spark an idea?

Water Collection

Whether collecting rainwater to filter and drink or gray water to water flowers and vegetables with, a plastic barrel is an ideal choice. Place a screen on top of the barrel to keep out birds, other animals and debris, place the barrel in a spot that receives a lot of rain, such as under downspouts, and you have created a rainwater collection system. For a gray water collection system, hook up the barrel so it will collect water from your showers, sinks and laundry. Hook up a gravity feed drip irrigation system to water flower and vegetable gardens.

Compost Bin

By using a plastic barrel with a lid, drilling holes for ventilation and placing the barrel on a base for easy turnin, you can create a compost bin to recycle food scraps and fertilize your garden. Similar barrel-type composters are available for purchase, but making your own will save a barrel and money, especially if you get the barrel for free.

Horses

Cut a hole in the side of a sealed barrel and use it for feeding or watering horses when turned on its side; place blocks underneath to keep it from rolling. Storing grain and other feed in plastic barrels keeps the feed dry and the mice and bugs out of it. Placing several barrels in an arena and using them for games like barrel racing, jumps and other training is fun for horse and rider alike.

Dogs

Store dog food in a plastic barrel to keep the food fresh and free of pests. Plastic barrels also make excellent dog houses. Use blocks to keep the barrel from rolling and either cut a hole in one end or take the lid off, providing access to the inside of the barrel. Lay down some hay, wood chips or bedding for the dog to lie on and you have created a warm place for your dog to get out of the wind and weather.
