More Water Pressure

Adding water pressure increases water flow.

Adding water pressure to an existing system means increasing the pounds per square inch (PSI) from the supply. A municipal water system's pressure can be increased by adjusting the water regulator. A private home water well system will entail adjustment to the water pumps' pressure switch. In both of these methods, the actual pressure is increased, which will result in a greater water flow that is measured in gallons per minute (GPM). Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Water Regulator

1. Locate the water regulator on a municipal water system. The brass-colored bell-shaped fixture is generally plumbed next to the water meter.

2. Fit the jaws of the crescent wrench over the lower lock nut that sits next to the top of the bell-shaped housing. Turn the nut in a counterclockwise direction to loosen. The nut should be turned only two times.

3. Move the jaws of the crescent wrench to the longer adjustment bolt head. Turn the wrench in a clockwise direction to increase the water pressure. Make two full revolutions to the bolt head.

4. Test the water pressure by opening a cold-water faucet. Allow the water to run for 10 seconds. Adjust the water regulator as needed.

Pressure Switch Adjustment

5. Locate the pressure switch on your private home well system. The switch's electrical contacts are protected by a gray-colored metal or plastic cover. Turn the small nut, that secures the cover to the switch body, in a counterclockwise direction to remove it. Note the electrical contacts are energized by electrical power. Use caution when making the pressure adjustment.

6. Raise the overall pump pressure setting by fitting the jaws of the crescent wrench over the larger "cut in" and "cut off" pressure adjustment nut. Turn the nut one full revolution clockwise.

7. Open a cold-water faucet and allow the pump to cycle to raise the internal pressure.

8. Make further pressure increase adjustments by turning the nut only one revolution at a time. Open the faucet and test. Replace the protective pump switch cover when adjustments are complete.
