Overflowing gutters are commonly due to clogging.
Rain gutters are installed on the home to prevent water from flooding the ground near the base of the home. When water floods the ground near the home, the basement walls or foundation may absorb the water and crack, causing costly repairs. Gutters guide the water through a downspout, which clears the water several feet from the home. Gutter overflow is often caused due to clogging from leaves and other debris. Cleaning gutters is time consuming, but is worth the effort. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Set the end of a ladder against the gutter with the feet sturdily placed on the ground. Put on some gloves and a pair of safety glasses. Climb the ladder and place a small piece of two-by-four into the gutter to prevent it from bending.
2. Scoop out any debris in the gutter using a trowel and put it into a bucket.
3. Place a garden hose fitted with a high pressure nozzle into the gutter to blast out any excess dirt or debris. Scrub any encrusted dirt with a hard bristled brush.
4. Check the downspout to see if water is flowing freely through it. If it is not, insert the end of a plumber's auger into the downspout and turn the handle until you feel the end touch the clog. Pull on the snake once it is embedded in the debris and pull the junk out of the bottom.
