Protect Deck Paint

The paint on your deck can fade over time if not protected.

Wood decks are often painted to endure elements such as snow, rain, hail and even extreme heat. Routine maintenance, such as regular sweeping and spraying your deck with a hose will help preserve your deck's cleanliness. To prevent the paint on your deck from being damaged by the weather and to maintain its look, treat and weatherproof your deck. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Sweep your deck and clear it of any leaves, sticks, loose dirt and any other form of debris. Clean the rails and posts as well.

2. Wash your deck, including the rails and posts, by spraying it with a hose or a power washer. Clean off any dried-on dirt, spider webs, grease and other imperfections. Wood absorbs water, so allow your deck to dry for a minimum of 48 hours before applying the wood sealer to ensure that the wood on your deck is completely dry. If it rains, sweep and spray your deck once more, and restart your countdown and wait another 48 hours before treating your deck.

3. Seal your deck by applying a thin coat of outdoor wood sealer with your paint brush. Apply the sealer by moving your paint brush in long, smooth strokes. Always stroke your paint brush in the same direction, to ensure that the sealant is applied evenly. Seal the rails and posts first and work your way down. Once the rails and posts are sealed, stain the floor of the deck. Seal the steps on your deck last, as you will need to walk up and down them to access the rail and posts. Allow the sealant to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before placing anything on your deck or walking on it. Wear your painter's mask while applying the sealant to avoid inhaling fumes.
