The main purpose of a rain gutter is to protect a building's foundation, doors and windows from rainwater, protecting the structure from erosion and leaks.


Types


Rain gutters are available in a variety of materials, including steel, copper, aluminum, lead, zinc, concrete, stone, wood or plastic. Most are box gutters, which are attached to the edge of a roof.

Clogged rain cutters can lead to a variety of problems including water leaks and a breeding ground for mosquitoes.


Benefits


Rain gutters allow for easy collection of rainwater. The gutters divert water to a downspout and a tube where the water comes out. This water can be collected via a rain barrel, which can be used to water gardens and lawns.
