Connect A Rain Barrel To A Downspout

Watering your plants can be challenging. Out of all of the water on Earth, most is salty and unusable. The remaining fresh water is needed as drinking water. In some areas the water supply is even being restricted due to drought. So, gardeners are forced to be creative in obtaining water for their plants. Rain may be the answer for your watering needs. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Drill the rivets and remove the outflow section of the downspout. Place the drill bit against a rivet while holding the drill at a 90-degree angle to the downspout. Hold the guttering firmly with your free hand. Squeeze the trigger of your drill and press the bit into the rivet until it comes out. Repeat the process on the rivet on the other side of the outflow. Place the outflow aside in a safe place for later re-installation.

2. Flatten the ground beneath the downspout with your shovel. The ground does not need to be exact, just a spot large enough for the barrel to sit with no major bumps. Measure the height of your barrel.

3. Cut a hole in the top leaving only a 3-inch rim with your reciprocating saw. Slide the blade into one of the openings and just cut in a circle staying approximately 3 inches away from the edge.

4. Measure from the ground straight up the downspout. Add 12 inches to the height measurement of your barrel. Mark the downspout on both sides at this level. Measure down 2 inches from these marks and make another set of marks. Cut below the bottom set of marks with your reciprocating saw. Trim from this cut up to the bottom set of marks with your snips. Cut the corners of your downspout from the bottom set of marks to the second set leaving four tabs that are 2 inches long each.

5. Slide your outflow over the tabs on the downspout. Drill through the rivet holes on the outflow and into the downspout. Slide the shaft of a rivet into your rivet gun. Press the head of the rivet into the holes in the outflow and downspout. Squeeze the handle of the rivet gun to compress it and bind the two pieces together. Repeat the process through the other side completing the installation. Place your barrel under the newly positioned outflow and wait for the rain.
