Make A Drum Rack

Drum racks are used to hold cylindrical vessels such as wine barrels, oil drums or water barrels. They are similar to heavy-duty storage racks, but usually have spots designed for drums to lie down without rolling around. Drum racks are designed to hold drums in a horizontal position, as this allows for easy draining or access to the fluid that is kept inside. Drum racks can be purchased at many industrial supply stores for hundreds of dollars; however, building your own will allow you to spend only a fraction of that amount. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Lay two 48-inch boards parallel with their outside edges 35 inches apart. Set a 35-inch board perpendicular to the two boards and on top of both of them, so it lies flat with its edge flush with the ends of the boards. Screw the 35-inch board to the 48-inch boards using four screws total.

2. Screw a 35-inch board to the 48-inch boards in the same manner as in Step 1 so it is parallel with the first 35-inch board, but located 36 inches away. This is one of the sides to your drum rack. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to build the opposite side.

3. Position the sides so they are standing upright and so the 48-inch boards are 30 inches apart. The 35-inch boards that are flush with the ends should be touching the ground. All of the 35-inch boards should be located between the 48-inch boards. Set a sheet of plywood on top of the edges of the bottom two 35-inch boards. The 30-inch edge of the plywood should be flush with the ends of the boards. Screw the plywood to the boards in this location. Use eight screws total. Screw the last sheet of plywood to the top two 35-inch boards in the same manner.

4. Cut the 15-inch boards corner to corner with your circular saw. You should be dividing each board into two equal-size triangular pieces.

5. Set a pair of the triangular pieces on the bottom shelf between a pair of 4-inch by 4-inch boards that are 30 inches apart. They should be standing on their 15-inch edges, with their hypotenuses slanting toward each other. The 6-inch sides should be up against the 4-inch by 4-inch boards. Screw four screws through the hypotenuse of each board and into the plywood. Repeat this process on the opposite side and on the top shelf. These boards will keep your drums stationary.
