There are many community service projects throughout Northern Virginia.
Community service projects benefit members of the community who are in need and enrich the lives of children and teen volunteers. In 2009, Fairfax County volunteers donated almost $900,000 worth of volunteer hours through various community projects and programs organized by Volunteer Fairfax. Not only will your child learn a new skill, hobby or interest it may also transform your child's life, providing them with unique experiences that may help them plan their future.
Volunteer Fairfax
Volunteer Fairfax provides a wide range of community-service projects all throughout Fairfax County. Kids and teens ages 8 to 18 can participate in park preservation activities, give the gift of clear sight, advocate for abused and neglected children, raise money for MS research and much more. For more than 35 years, Volunteer Fairfax has matched volunteers with nonprofit organizations, using information such as the volunteers' skills and interests. The organization supports more than 40 programs and services.

Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment
What started off as an effort to keep Arlington litter free now focuses its attention on other ways to promote a cleaner environment and greener way of life. Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment, or ACE, clean up streams and water sheds, remove invasive plants, mark storm drains and provide educational, green-living events such as Make Your Own Rain Barrel workshops and the Green Living Expo. The organization also boasts community involvement with special events such as the E-CARE Household Waste and Recycling event, where members of the community are encouraged to bring hazardous cleaning supplies and old computer monitors for proper disposal as well as eyeglasses, bicycles and more for donations.

Friends of Accotink Creek
Accotink Creek is made up of a collection of small feeder creeks that flows until it reaches Lake Accotink, a man-made reservoir and popular park of the same name. Along the way, the creek is exposed to construction sediment from the HOT Lanes project as well as other forms of pollution and abuse. Friends of Accotink Creek work together to protect the watershed, and clear the habitat and surrounding recreational areas.

Loudoun Youth Initiative
The Loudoun Youth Initiative encourages teens to speak up about problems, risks and other issues that matters most to them in their communities. Teens must then create a plan on tackle the issues, do the necessary research, offer a creative solution and include a discussion about solve the problem. Teens then go on to present their findings at a competition where winners will be chosen based on depth of analysis, originality, solution quality and more.
