Protect A Shotgun Mic From Rain

A shotgun microphone records audio from all directions, giving you fuller, more complete audio on your video camera recordings. However, the microphone is an externally based device, and often is several inches long. Due to the length of the microphone it is exposed to the elements when outside. In order to protect the microphone and reduce overall interference with recording quality, there are several options available to troubleshoot the situation.

Instructions

1. Place the microphone sleeve over the microphone. This is a foam-like padding that slides right over the mic, protecting it from rain and wind. This is your first line of defense against rain.

2. Slide a small sock over the shotgun microphone. This works as an added source of padding and protection against the rain. A sock is a quick fix if you don't have a microphone sleeve, and also works in conjunction with the sleeve. Additionally, the sock will not reduce the overall recording quality of the mic.

3. Hold an umbrella over the camera. This will keep the greatest amount of rain from the shotgun microphone. If possible, ask someone around you to help. If you are alone, you will need to place the camera on a tripod and hold the umbrella yourself.
