Install A Simi Valley Rain Gutter

Rain gutters need to be installed properly to provide proper drainage and to ensure their long life.

Gutters collect rain and snow runoff from the roof and channel it into downspouts away from the house. Gutters, downspouts and all the necessary tools and equipment are available at local building supply centers or you can hire a professional installer who has their own tools. You will find many types if gutters available on the market such as seamless, soldered, continuous, copper, sheet metal, aluminum and vinyl. Whether installing rain gutters in Simi Valley, California or any other location, there are basics of the process that will ensure their proper drainage and long life. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the length of the area to be covered and purchase the rain gutters. Your local garden or home supply center will be able to assist you in answering any questions about rain gutter installation and determining what supplies you will need. There are also many manufacturers that sell rain gutter packages online. The manufacturer provides everything you need to complete the job, except for tools and ladder. Compare information, prices and warranties from different retailers.

2. Mark the fascia board to indicate the top edge of the gutter. This can be done using a chalk line. Slope the line about one inch for every 20 linear feet of gutter, sloping toward the downspout. This will help ensure that the gutters flow properly. Fascia board is any vertical board that covers the area at the eaves or edge of a roof that protects the edge of the roof assembly.

3. Install gutter hangers according to the manufacturer's instructions. Typically this will be every three feet. The hidden hanger method is typically used where the hanger is screwed to the fascia. Sturdy crossbar hangers clip onto the front of the gutter, cross over the top of the gutter and clip on the bracket on the back of the gutter.

4. Measure, cut and assemble the gutter and install the downspout mouth according the manufacturer's instructions. Install the gutter sections on the hangers and put the downspouts in place, again following the manufacturer's directions.

5. Install leaders, which are pieces of downspouts, from the base of the downspout to a dry well. This is a hole located five feet from the foundation of the house and filled with gravel. Check with your local building department for requirements. Some locations require that runoff routes to a ground sewer.

6. Test the system with a garden hose and seal any leaks with sealant.
