Creative Room Design Ideas

Use creativity when designing your rooms.

Get creative when decorating your home by adding old furniture, interesting paint and window treatments and unusual color combinations. Look for inspiration at garage sales where you can often find unusual pieces. Check flea markets and antique stores for vintage items. With a little imagination you can create a home that looks like no other. Does this Spark an idea?

Bedroom

Paint lattice white for a garden-like effect in the bedroom.

Make a bedroom a sanctuary by painting the walls in soft colors. Blues and greens are good choices for bedrooms. Create a faux finish effect by sponging on paint mixed with glaze, or try a combed effect by dragging a specially made comb through the paint and then onto the walls. These finishes will personalize your space. For a fresh springtime look, add painted lattice in a bedroom to make a chair rail. Paint the lattice white and cap off with molding. Paint a garden scene above the lattice by stenciling on vines, flowers, birds and butterflies. Add a focal point to the bedroom by wallpapering the wall behind the bed with a neutral color grass cloth. Grass cloth wallpaper adds texture and warmth to a bedroom. Cover roller shades for the windows with fabric or wallpaper for a personalized look.

Family room

Add brick floors to a family room for texture.

Add texture and character to a family room with a poured concrete or brick floor. Cover either of these rough surfaces with vintage Oriental or Persian rugs. Cut old wood rain barrels in half and make end tables. Add a piece of marble or stone to the top of an old iron sewing machine base for an instant side table. Make lamps from small milk cans. Paint with milk paint for a country theme. Apply a few layers of faux Venetian plaster to the walls to add depth and color. Leave the windows bare or cover with simple bamboo shades.

Kitchen

Update a boring kitchen.

Choose stainless steel for a kitchen counter top. Offset the cool, industrial look of stainless with warm colors such as rust and red. Use tumbled marble tiles in a terra cotta shade for a back splash. Whitewash plain concrete floors for a bit of color. Choose retro dining sets for an eating area. Recover the chair cushions in a bold color such as tomato red or yellow. Use shag rugs to soften the floor. Add an old bookcase to store cookbooks, pottery and dishes.
