Connect Plastic Hoses

If you have two or more sections of plastic hose that you would like to connect, you will need to purchase the appropriate hose fitting. There is a wide variety of hose fittings available, and your choice will depend on the size, type and purpose of the plastic hoses that you are connecting. A garden hose, for example, will need a different type of fitting than a hydraulic hose. Choose a plastic fitting for smaller, lightweight hoses. Brass barbed fittings may be necessary for more heavy-duty hoses. Also available are elbow fittings, two-way fittings and adapter fittings for connecting one type of hose to another. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Find a reputable hose fitting manufacturer to order a fitting, or peruse your local hardware store for fitting selections. Choose a fitting that is appropriate to your hose connecting needs. Take a piece of your hose with you to the store to help ensure finding a proper match.

2. Cut the ends of the hoses that will be fitted together so they are flat and smooth.

3. Plug one side of the fitting into the inside of one hose. Push firmly on the adapter to make sure it is snug. Plug the other side of the fitting into the inside of the other hose. Soften the ends of the hoses by running them under hot water and/or rubbing a bit of soapy water around the ends of the fitting if you are having difficulty pushing in the fitting.

4. Place metal clamps around the ends of the hoses where they meet and go around the fitting. Tighten the clamps by screwing the clamp screws.

5. Run some water through the fitted hoses to ensure that there are no leaks at the joint.
