Stone troughs have a distinct advantage because they can be bought in one piece and set up wherever you want them in your yard. The stone look can give a temple-like or classical style, depending on the quality and roughness of stone you choose. They are also easier to clean than other water features. Keep in mind, however, that they will be very heavy and difficult to move, raising transportation costs.
Japanese-Style Features
Japanese-style water features typically use clay or stone basins with simple designs and small circulating pools. One of their most noticeable features is the bamboo spout, which is used to trickle water into the basin. These bamboo spouts do not hold up in harsh weather, but if you live in a milder climate, consider these traditional water features for your rock garden.
Barrels and Buckets
Barrels and buckets are quaint water features associated more with cottages than farms or temples. A galvanized bucket or other waterproof container works very well for a rustic water feature, although you may have to drill holes for water circulation. Traditional barrels can make excellent rain catchers or water features, but you may need to install a water liner.
Spouts and Pumps
Spouts and old-fashioned pumps do not need to be attached to wells to make them effective rustic water features. Incorporate them in pools or riverbeds, and run your water lines through them to give the idea that they actually work. Be careful, though --- the rustic iron spouts and pumps may look great, but they also rust. Consider coating them with a sealant, or find a modern imitation version.
