Paint Rifle Markings

Camouflaging your weapon can help you blend further into your surroundings when hunting.

Hunters and gun enthusiasts often enjoy customizing and maintaining their weapons. Paint customization techniques can be used to modify a rifle's appearance. Rifles and shotguns can be painted with camouflage markings in order to better conceal the weapon while hunting. Camouflage markings break up the outline of the rifle and reduce glare from reflected sunlight. Painting camouflage markings on a rifle involves field stripping your weapon and using a few different paint application techniques.

Instructions

1. Unload the rifle completely. Visually inspect the weapon to ensure no live ammo is present.

2. Field strip the weapon and remove the barrel and stock. Because all rifles will vary, consult your owner's manual for specific disassembly instructions.

3. Clean the rifle barrel, stock and outer frame components thoroughly with gun cleaning solvent to remove any dirt, debris or oil. Wipe the parts clean and dry thoroughly.

4. Tape off the interior part of the barrel to ensure that only the outer parts that can be seen when the weapon is assembled are painted.

5. Spray a coat of metal primer onto the barrel, stock and frame components. Allow the primer to dry thoroughly. Apply a second coat of primer.

6. Spray the barrel, stock and frame components black. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

7. Cut tape into teardrop and stripe shapes, and apply the tape to random areas of the barrel and stock.

8. Spray hunter or forest green paint onto the barrel, stock and frame components. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. Remove the tape.

9. Place tape over the green-painted areas. Apply new shaped tape pieces to different sections of the barrel and frame. Spray brown paint onto the barrel stock and frame components and allow the paint to dry thoroughly. Remove the tape.

10. Decide if you want to add more browns, greens or other colors such as gray. Repeat taping off your painted sections and adding color until you are satisfied with your camouflage markings. Allow all the paint to completely dry.

11. Spray a matte finish clear coat over the barrel, stock and frame components to protect the paint job. Allow the finish to dry before reassembling the rifle.
