Old wood casks make decorative rain barrels.
Rain barrels are an effective way to practice water conservation. A rain barrel is positioned along a house to catch run-off from the roof or in a general area to fill with rain water. The water is then used to water a garden or yard. The ideal rain barrel is a 50-gallon barrel with a water spigot attached to the base. Most barrels do not come with the spigot attached, so installing one is required. The process is simple. Most hardware stores sell spigots that bolt into place. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Drill a hole into the lower portion of the rain barrel using a drill bit sized for the external diameter of the threaded spigot connection.
2. Attach a rubber washer to the threaded connection of the spigot and press the connection through the hole.
3. Attach a second rubber washer to the threaded connection and twist the retaining nut onto the connection. Tighten the nut down with adjustable pliers.
