A barrel is a unit of capacity used to measure the amount of some liquid products, most commonly crude oil and beer. The actual capacity per barrel depends upon the type of the product; for example, 1 barrel of crude oil corresponds to 42 gallons, while 1 barrel of beer is 31 gallons. The production per year is also often expressed by weight in metric tons. To convert the weight to barrels, you need to know the density of the liquid.
Instructions
1. Find out the density of the liquid you need to do calculations for (see Resources). For example, the density of crude oil is 825 kilograms per cubic meter.
2. Multiply metric tons per year by 1,000 to calculate the weight in kilograms. For example, 15,000 metric tons corresponds to 15,000 x 1,000 = 15,000,000 kg.
3. Divide the weight in kilograms by the density to calculate the volume in cubic meters. In this example, the volume is 15,000,000 / 825 = 18181.82 cubic meters.
4. Multiply the volume in cubic meters by 264.172 to calculate the volume in gallons. In this example, 18,181.82 cubic meters corresponds to 18,181.82 x 264.172 = 4,803,127.75 gallons.
5. Divide the volume in gallons by 42 to calculate barrels. In this example, the amount of crude oil is 4,803,127.75 / 42 = 114,360 barrels.
